A snowy, Christmas-postcard scene. Ester states that she wants to be an actress. "She's just a silly little girl whose head has been turned by the movies". "I'm gonna be somebody!"
Grandmother gives her advice as she swings in her rocking chair.
Ester jumps on train.
Hollywood pool party. Bus comes straight towards camera with sign for Los Angeles on it, then a train, then an aeroplane. Ester arrives and looks at it all in awe. Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Jean Harlow's handprints on Sunset Boulevard. Also handprints from Harold Lloyd, Joe Brown, Shirley Temple, Eddie Cantor, Norman Maine.
Classified advert for a room to rent on Hollywood Blvd.
Says to hotel manager "I'm going in to the movies". Standing in front of a board that shows how many extras the company has on it's books. Goes for a part as an extra. Walks away disappointed.
Goes to bar with man who tries to cheer her up. Gets drunk and nearly falls off stool.
Sign saying HOLLYWOOD BOWL. Shot of interior. Man says how much he likes Beethoven. Norman Maine arrives with a very well dressed woman. The crowd cheer and Norman waves at them, but the cheer is for the orchestra conductor. The paparazzi annoy him and he ends up getting in a fight.
Big Hollywood party. Janet is working as a waitress, does impressions of different actresses to try and get noticed.
Norman approaches the bar and asks for "Scotch and Soda".
Norman approaches the bar again and asks for "Scotch and Soda". Barman looks at him in amazement.
Woman smashes him over the head with a plate. He passes out.
Man is woken up in bed by the telephone ringing.
Man (hotel manager) walks into a light bulb. It blows up / explodes
Ester having her makeup done, with all the crew organising themselves around her.
Funny scene - trying to decide on a stage name for her. (Vicki Lester) Man talking into microphone. Ester walking along, balancing books on her head / deportment, having elocution lessons, having her makeup done. She pulls a face.
Nice shot of posh Hollywood diner. She is given a job, and faints.
Her first film is shown in cinema. Good shot of cinema, looking up through the aisle. Great screen kiss.
Exterior cinema. In lights: PREVIEW TONITE, cars & pedestrians.
Exterior CAFÉ TROCADERO. View across Los Angeles from hills.
Boxing match, some great shots.
They get married, in local court house. Man says "There go a couple of rats I raised from mice". They drive off.
Their Honeymoon. Great shot of caravan being pulled across amazing countryside - through the desert, past a lake and forest. Ester cooking food and singing in back of caravan.
They walk through beautiful gardens to pool.
Billboard with her name on, mailroom with letters being poured out. Norman's contract is ended.
Playing golf. Turns out to be in living room.
