Cut to sign on door ‘Features’. Lady opens door to reveal Features editor (smoking pipe) and his team checking their contributions; painting of soldiers in dress uniform on horseback, photos of footballers etc. Pan out to vs of men typing on manual typewriters compiling their editorial interspersed with draft copies of printing coming off the press. Cut CU sub editor working on layout, pan out to view clock on wall 8.30 pm.
Cut vs men arranging print blocks into wooden frames, applying ink with a roller, laying sheet of paper over blocks and printing a test page by running a wooden roller over the paper. CU of printed test page. CU Sub editor at desk lights cigarette as a late news item arrives at his desk. CU of text; Explosion 1 Rush ‘Heavy casualties feared after explosion; ’CU men looking at news item, CU clock 8.56 pm CU men looking at sheet of paper, one man walks off carrying paper. Sub editor sits at desk (cigarettes and lighter, white mug, fairly full ashtray all on desk presses button on intercom system.
Cut to man holding telephone receiver. CU man running test print. CU test print: ‘Explosion at new A-Station. Heavy Casualties: area may be evacuated.’ CU rearranging print blocks in wooden frame. Man at lino-type machine. Editorial team working on new layout. CU office clock 9.07p.m. CU frame of print blocks. Man cuts off part of block with clippers and fits into space in framework.
Cut to night overview of stationary steam trains. CU train coming alongside platform at night. MCU Editorial team completing printing frame applying ink with hand roller laying sheet of paper over blocks and printing a test page by running a wooden roller over the paper. CU of printed test page. CU ‘HOE’ machine. Sliding drawer opens, man removes cover, wipes back of plate then lifts it to check print. CU Clock on wall 9.09 pm CU drum shaped machine, lid raised and curved plate removed. Plate taken and placed in another machine with a sheet of metal (? Die cast machine); operator moves various levers before removing finished printing plate. Panning shot following plate along conveyor belt and down to print room. Man takes plate and inserts it in rotary press, using spanner to secure it to machine. Machine operator gives ‘thumbs up’ sign before pressing the ‘start’ button on the printing press. CU of rotating printing plate and paper running off the ‘Crabtree’ printing press. CU printing machine working at high speed.
